Sector(s): Carbon reduction / Low-carbon transition, Waste management, Water
Ma’alot-Tarshiha is dedicated to reducing its CO₂ emissions by 20 percent by the year 2020, with a long-term goal of using 100 percent renewable energy. In line with this ambition, the municipality has established a short-term plan which includes the installation of a biomass gasifier. The municipality produces 1,500 metric tons of forest waste each year. Currently, the forest waste is disposed of as mulch in open areas. The use of Combined Heat Power (CHP) technology through a Biomass Gasifier will convert the wood waste into a fuel source, producing over one thousand MWh of energy per year – equivalent to the electricity used by 72 homes.
