Catbalogan City Aqua-Agri Integrated Project
Focus: Adaptation, Mitigation
Sector(s): Biodiversity / Ecosystems, Food security / Urban agriculture
Catbalogan’s prosperity is under threat from overfishing, unregulated land conversion, poor infrastructure planning and the impacts of climate change. Part of the city’s response is the Aqua-Agri Integrated Project, which involves the creation of a 10km2 marine park powered by tidal energy. The marine park will be capable of supporting an integrated industry-based economy (fish farming, feed mill, commercial farming, and livestock farming) via a public private partnership. As fishers will no longer travel into open water to fish, CO2 emissions from fishing boats will be halved by 2019.
